When to Hire a Professional Organizer (and How to Find the Perfect One)
Are you feeling overwhelmed by stuff?
Are you tired of hiding “piles” when guests come over to visit?
Are you wasting time looking for things?
Have you repurchased items because you can’t find them when you need them?
Are you going through a life transition, on the cusp of downsizing or selling your home?
Are you out of space in your garage, workshop or barn?
Are you transitioning your parents’ to Independent or Assisted Living but live out of state?
There are SO many reasons to call in a professional to help. The right time to do it is when: (1) you’re ready to embrace a new approach to tackling your 'stuff' issues, (2) you have the financial means to invest in support, and (3) you understand that changing your habits to create sustainable systems will save you time, reduce stress, and ultimately add value to your life.
Organizers can help with a variety of needs. Below is a non-cumulative list:
In-home organizing (kitchens, pantries, kids rooms, closets, etc.)
Garages, workshops and barns
Specialty organizing (craft rooms, hobbies, art supplies, etc)
Paper and file management
Time management coaching
Small business, office and workspace organization
Specialized populations: ADHD, hoarding, senior downsizing, etc
Virtual organizing
Digital file organization: Helping clients organize files, photos, and emails
And so much more!
Once you narrow in on WHAT type of help you’re seeking, then you can focus on WHO to hire.
How to Find Your Organizing Match:
Ask Your Network – Friends or Local Groups (Nextdoor, Facebook, etc.)
Search for Specialists
Need help with a specific type of space? Many organizers focus on niches like garages, closets, or even digital organizing. Find someone who’s a wizard in your particular area of need.
Read Through Their Website.
Look for someone whose style matches what you’re looking for—and whose tone feels approachable.
Questions to Ask Before You Commit:
“What’s Your Process Like?” Do they Marie Kondo everything? Use color-coded bins? Require you to toss everything you own? Make sure their approach aligns with your comfort level and budget.
“Have You Worked on Projects Like Mine Before?” An organizer who’s tackled a stuffed-to-the-rafters garage is going to have different expertise than one who’s a wizard with kids’ rooms. (And yes, some are great at both!)
“Are You a Solo Organizer or Do You Have a Team?”
“How Do You Handle Sentimental Items?” If you’re nervous about parting with your 8th-grade soccer trophies, ask how they help clients decide what stays and what goes.
“What’s Your Pricing Structure?” Transparency is key! Some organizers charge hourly, while others offer packages. Knowing the costs upfront (and what’s included) will help you choose who’s best for you.
“Do You Offer Maintenance Plans?” You’ve got your space beautifully organized—but what happens in six months? Some pros offer follow-up sessions or maintenance services to keep your home running smoothly.
